MERCEDES has often been an innovator in the realm of car design – not least with the idea of a solid folding roof – the coupe-cabriolet (CC).
The original SLK was a stunning design with a low seating position that left occupants cosy with the roof down even when it was cold, but let down by a rather rough four cylinder engine.
Almost every other car maker has copied the roof so the latest SLK, which launches in June, has a much tougher job.
However, it does come with the first ever option of a panoramic glass roof which be transparent or dark at the driver’s whim.
Mercedes says the new model unites comfort and high-quality with a sporting flair, economy and green credentials.
Three models will be available – two with four cylinder 1.8 engines with either 184 or 204bhp, and a 3.5 V6 with 306bhp.
All are BlueEfficiency units fitted with automatic start-stop to help lower fuel consumption and emissions, and the 200 can achieve an excellent 46mpg.
Interior
The company claims a generous size, stylish cabin and high-quality materials as we should expect. All is trimmed in brushed aluminium although wood is an option.
It comes with traditional round dials and the colour display for communications and entertainment can be read by both driver and passenger.
