Hello there, and thank you for this great service.
I intend to buy from a friend an A160 Mercedes (2000) for £1500 which was originally bought from a scrap auction (for £850) as category D.
It's manual, petrol and Mileage is 55,000 It looks in a very good condition with ongoing MOT coverage but I have some suspicions about: The low mileage over the last 10 years And also about not being able to know the reason behind the car being written-off in category D in the first place.
The only downside I found was ABS lights up after 15 min of driving where the ABS system stops working but it re-work againg after re-igniting the ingine where the ABS light goes off. I would be grateful if you can help with any comments or advice whether to buy it or not as I see it a bargain!
Thanks a lot Nas
Answer
Hi Nas,
The average mileage is about 77,000 and this car is worth about £3,100.
Category D is the least serious category of write-off. It is really just an economic decision; the insurer decides that giving you the value of the car will be cheaper than paying for the repair.
So this car has no reason to be SO cheap and you should proceed with caution. It may be a bargain or a big problem.
Take these steps before buying:
- Have it M.O.T. 'd even though it's not due and have the ABS light fixed
- Get a data check
Good luck
Matt
