I have a 1997 R reg Mercedes C-Class C180.
The garage I use said the fan needed a slight adjustment. I can hear a noise from the car, like knocking noise from the fan area prior to starting the engine.
The car doesnt overheat or anything but the engine management light has been on for a month now.
Any advice please?
Answer
Check the coolant temperature sensor that feeds the engine management ECU. If it’s faulty the cooling fan will run all the time, which means it’ll start up as soon as you turn the ignition on. The sensor fault will also put the management light on.
The knocking could be something in the way catching on the fan. Investigate by turning the fan by hand, but make sure the key is not in the ignition and remove the fan relay or fuse before you put you fingers anywhere near it – fans starting unexpectedly remove fingers!
