Why Buy: It looks good. That Mercedes badge makes all the difference and that is backed up by a huge improvement in build quality. A cut above most rival hatchbacks and coupes. So a stylish and comfortable way around; it’s also very safe.
Equipment: Good levels of standard kit mean that cruise control, climate control and electric windows are all part of the package. SE though adds more of the sporty trimmings such as alloy wheels and first owners could have specified Evolution extras which means sports suspension.
Driving: This isn’t really a sporty car despite its name, this is much more of a comfortable cruiser. There is little wind or road noise, and the suspension is soft and all the engines are very refined whether petrol or diesel.
Marketplace: Diesels models are holding their values even in difficult times, whereas the bigger petrols can struggle. Most seem to be very tidy and well looked after so you should avoid the harder used company cars unless they can be bought at a bargain price.
Best Buys: It is the petrol ones which are great value, because the whole world is going diesel and 180 is the easiest way into these models. For resale value it would be a 200 CDi but it will not be cheap. C200 petrol if you do not do a high mileage is far better.
Sum Up: Don’t be misled by the name, this is no sports car, even the V6 powered one. If you want practicality this is no more than a posh hatchback and you would be better off with a saloon. So with the SC you pay more for less, but for many the Mercedes image makes it worthwhile.
