Here's an example fault on the MERCEDES S-Class (1999 - 2005)

What to look for:

Test drive the car. Listen for a loud rattling from underneath the car, coming from the exhaust area. This is more likely from 60,000 to 100,000 miles.

What it means:

This rattling could be caused by the breakup of the catalytic converters. The filters inside the ‘cats’ can disintegrate. The debris from this can be sucked into the cylinders via the Exhaust Gas Re-circulation valves. This can destroy the engine, meaning a re-build or a new engine is necessary.

What to do

If you hear this sound – be wary. A new engine can cost £5000+. If you suspect this problem, have the inspected by a professional mechanic.
