Here's an example fault on the MINI Clubman (2007-)
What to look for:
Test drive the car. Make sure that the engine idle speed is regular and the car does not ‘hunt’ and idle (i.e. the revs rise and fall without use of the accelerator). Also check that the turbo has a marked effect (a sudden burst of power) when it comes in.
What it means:
If you find ‘hunting’ at idle or a flat power delivery then this may be a problem with the turbocharger dump valve. This will need to be replaced.
What to do
If you find this fault and the car is under warranty (3 years unlimited or 5 years if the car has the ‘TLC’ option) then BMW/Mini may repair it for free. Otherwise try to reduce the price of the car by £150.00.
