MITSUBISHI has revealed the new Lancer - the first model to be based on the new global programme which will spawn a full range of vehicles.
The newcomer will be the star of the Mitsubishi stand at the North American Auto Show in Detroit in January.
Designed at Mitsubishi's studios in Europe and Japan, the Lancer shares its looks with the Concept-X and Concept-Sportback show cars.
To be launched progressively in world markets from spring 2007, beginning with North America, the Lancer will be the first of a full family of cars including an entry-level 1.5-litre petrol model for Europe plus the new Lancer Evolution supercar.
There will also be a Volkswagen-supplied two-litre 140bhp diesel and a high-performance two-litre turbo petrol.
Project Global will support the launch of several new Mitsubishi vehicles over the next few years for markets in Japan, North America, Russia, Asia-Pacific and Europe.
Models from business partners DaimlerChrysler, with whom it was co-developed, and Peugeot Citroën will also be based on this global platform.
The project will also encompass the introduction of a new range of engines co-engineered with DaimlerChrysler and Hyundai.
It is expected to be towards the end of 2007 before the Lancer arrives in the UK in right hand drive form.
