Bodywork and External Checks

Area What to look for What it means What to do
Bodywork There are no reported faults on the bodywork. Complete standard checks for rust and accident damage.

Engine Checks

Area What to look for What it means What to do
Cam belt Check the paperwork to see if the cam belt has been changed on schedule. On most engines the cam belt must be changed within 5 years or 54,000 miles. If the cam belt and associated parts (such as the pump and tensioner) have not been changed, and the mileage is over these boundaries, the cam belt is likely to fail soon. Usually the engine has to be replaced or at least re-built after a cam belt failure. Ensure that the cam belt is changed before the car is driven anywhere if it is coming close to its interval. Changing the belt will cost £270 - £495.
Diesel smoke Look in the rear view mirror or directly at the exhaust to see if there is any black smoke when the engine is being revved. Also, check in the mirrors when you lift off the accelerator from speeds around 70 m.p.h. Black smoke in these situations indicates that the diesel pump needs calibrating. Negotiate a £300 discount or have the repair completed.
Crankshaft pulley With the bonnet open and the engine running, listen for a very loud and clear rattle at the bottom of the engine. This noise usually means the crankshaft pulley is loose, but the noise can be ignored by the inexperienced. If ignored, the engine will be severely damaged and may need replacing. The pulley needs replacing urgently. Do not drive the car until repaired or checked. Budget £350 for the repair.
Glow plugs Ensure you start the car from cold before buying it. If the car doesn't start easily the glow plugs usually need replacing. Use Mitsubishi parts as they last much longer than pattern parts. Negotiate a £160 discount or have the repair completed.

Interior Checks

Area What to look for What it means What to do
Gearbox The automatic gearbox should change gear smoothly and promptly as you accelerate. Check that it isn't sluggish or clunky. If the gear change is sluggish, change the gearbox filter and oil. This should be completed every 24,000 miles. Negotiate a £120 discount or have the repair completed.

Wheels, Brakes and Suspension Checks

Area What to look for What it means What to do
Pitman arms When driving on a good flat road, check that the car holds a straight line easily and doesn’t wander to the side of the road. Then turn the wheel from side to side to test how precise the steering is. It should be firm and decisive, not vague and woolly. If the car wanders or the steering is vague, the problem is usually the pitman arms and idlers. The car will fail its next M.O.T. for this. Negotiate a £500 discount or have the repair completed.

Recalls

Date Model Recall
07 Oct 1996 Built: 01/01/1991 - 31/12/1994 Brake fluid may seep from the front flexible brake hoses impairing the efficiency of one or both braking circuits.
29 Jan 2002 Built: 01/01/2000 - 30/07/2001 There is a possibility that the accumulator diaphragm in the Hydraulic Brake Booster (HBB) might be manufactured improperly. This may cause the nitrogen pressure in the accumulator to drop. The following two symptoms may result: 1) The brake assist might be delayed in sudden hard braking. 2) Relatively large brake pedal loads might be required after long-term parking and first engine start, since specific brake pressure takes time to accumulate.
26 Apr 2002 Built: 01/01/1990 - 31/12/1999 Under severe and extreme conditions where the vehicle is used mainly off-road in a wet, muddy environment it is possible that the tapered section of the ball pin on the steering "Pitman" arm may break. This in the worst case could result in a loss of steering control.

12 Dec 2003 Shogun with 4M40 engines Built: : 09/05/1994 - 27/03/1997 There is a possibility that due to improper operation when assembling the engine at production, a crack occurred on the advance control lever of the cold start device on the injection pump.
