What to look for:
Check the paperwork to see if the cam belt has been changed on schedule. On most engines the cam belt must be changed within 5 years or 54,000 miles.
What it means:
If the cam belt and associated parts (such as the pump and tensioner) have not been changed, and the mileage is over these boundaries, the cam belt is likely to fail soon. Usually the engine has to be replaced or at least re-built after a cam belt failure.
What to do
Ensure that the cam belt is changed before the car is driven anywhere if it is coming close to its interval. Changing the belt will cost £270 - £495.

Here's an example fault on the MITSUBISHI Shogun (2000 -)
What to look for:
Test drive the vehicle. Make sure there is no hesitation from the engine when accelerating and that the car idles properly without any signs of roughness. Make sure the idle speed is consistent and that the rev counter stays still at idle.
What it means:
This fault can be caused by either carbon build up in the Exhaust Gas Re-Circulation valves or rust in the fuel tanks of some modes which causes failure of the low and high pressure fuel pumps. The faults have exactly the same symptoms from the driver’s seat and are comparative in repair cost.
What to do
If you find this fault and the car is under warranty (3 years unlimited miles) then Mitsubishi may repair it without charge. Otherwise it is advised to have the car inspected by a qualified mechanic. If you still wish to purchase the vehicle then try to negotiate a £2000.00 discount off of the price of the car.
