EXTRA special versions of an iconic Japanese sports car are being built to mark an automotive success story spanning four decades.

But only 370 examples of the two-seater model will be made available in showrooms across Europe.

The special 370Z is Nissan's tribute to the success of the series of Z cars that won acclaim in the US in the 1970s and played a key role in establishing the brand in global markets.

Currently, the UK is the largest market for the sixth-generation Z model, which has achieved more than 1,000 European registrations since it was launched last June - regarded as an exceptional achievement for a niche product in challenging market conditions.

Due to arrive in April, the limited run Black Edition coupe will come in metallic black and quartz finishes that 'heal' after stone chip damage, stand on 19-inch forged aluminium wheels and have eye-catching red brake callipers.

Inside, unique red leather and suede upholstery includes seats embossed with 40th anniversary logos, a leather steering wheel, distinctive red stitching and a touch-screen satellite navigation and audio system.

As in the standard car, power comes from a 3.7-litre, 24-valve twin cam V6 motor that provides rest to 62mph acceleration in 5.3 seconds and a top speed limited to 155mph.

'The 'story of Z' is full of positives, with success not just in the sales charts all over the world but on racetracks and at award ceremonies, too. The Black Edition is a fitting tribute to a great car,' said European marketing vice president Vincent Wijnen.

Prices start at £33,645.
