SMALL in name but big in character, the Nissan Tino has undergone some dramatic changes inside, outside and underneath.
And they have not only been for the better, but now make it the most economical medium sized MPV on the market with the 2.2 litre 136bhp diesel engine.
There is a temptation to cut corners with an MPV, to buy just what you need when you really need more than you think.
So I would not suggest buying the Tino with the alternative 112bhp diesel engine but go for the 136bhp unit, the most powerful diesel in a compact MPV.
It not only endows the Tino with petrol-like performance, but drags out diesel economy to an effortless 43mpg overall, only very slightly less than the 112bhp version.
But with the more powerful version you get strong acceleration and surprisingly composed cruising ability. That can count for a lot when loaded and covering the miles on a holiday or weekend away.
And you may even pay for that break with the money saved on insurance and running costs.
Neither would you be disappointed with the driving satisfaction as it has a good taut feel to the steering, confidence and control to the chassis and well balanced brakes underfoot.
Whether you are short, normal or tall, the room inside is good, although not outstanding, and seats have plenty of adjustment to cope with various demands. The back trio individually fold flat or forward very easily, increasing the load space from a nominal 60 to 440 litres.
Oddments room is good and access very easy as well. Seats are comfortable and have a good range of adjustment.
Visibility is clear all round, helped by the SVE's rear mounted camera to cover the blindspot under the window. You can also get a bird's eye view of what's ahead if you have the optional DVD satellite navigation system.
Keeping a cool head is also easy with the electronic climate control, backed up by powered windows.
In fact, it is an extremely good package with a smooth engine and gearbox, comfortable seats and compliant ride, with a roomy and versatile interior.
Significantly the Tino now comes with only one petrol engine - a 115bhp 1.8 litre - and this shows how times have changed to bias the diesel above the petrol.
I think the Tino is one of the more distinctive of the new generation MPV's with a lot to commend it and little to criticise.
