What to look for:
Look for blue/black smoke from the exhaust when the engine is warm. During the test drive, note if there is any loss of power/sluggishness. Open the bonnet when the engine is running and listen for a whistling or ‘graunching’ sound from the top of the engine.
What it means:
These symptoms indicate that the turbo is blown. Make sure the EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) valve is replaced at the same time as the turbo. This part can often be the cause of turbo problems on these engines
What to do
It will be fixed under warranty if the car is less than three years old (last year of warranty has a 60,000 mile limit). Otherwise negotiate £850 off of the asking price or have the repair carried out as part of the deal.
