Peugeot 206 CC Allure 1.6 HDi - Peugeot 206 Car Review

YOU must be doing something right to produce the UK's number one selling convertible for the last three years.

The Peugeot 206 CC has sped out of dealerships faster than Freddie Flintoff bowls bouncers. It's easy to see why, as this cabriolet embodies the joy of driving flat out on a fine summer's day with the top down.

And with the Keenan convertible curse - a torrent of rain that normally lasts for the entire time anything remotely capable of losing its roof comes into my possession - relenting for the week I made hay while the sun shone.

At the press of a button the folding hard top slips into the boot in an impressive display of technology normally the preserve of a far more expensive motor.

All you have to do is unlock the two roof locking handles and in 20 seconds it's job done. Out come the shades, on goes the excellent music system and down goes the accelerator.

Not that my head is easily turned by a bit of sunshine and a good looking car.

The 206 CC is fine for two people, but I pity the poor passengers asked to sit in rear. The kids just about made it with the aid of a shoehorn, but once the roof was down I was left struggling to fit their school bags in a boot the size of a shoebox.

So, not one for the school run then. I'm sure Peugeot is relieved to hear this as its super slinky offering targets young trendy things who go screaming around town annoying the neighbours.

Judging by the many Peugeot 206 CCs I saw on the road, it's also a car that appeals to young women. This is no surprise as there is something chic yet dangerous about the car. It's great to look at and the 1.6 diesel engine gives enough oomph to indulge a bit of girl power.

An official 0-62mph time of 11.6 seconds doesn't give this motor the credit it deserves for a punchy performance away from the lights.

The oil burner is also a good performer when it comes to fuel economy recording an official figure of 57.6mpg. There are two other engine options - the 1.6-litre and two-litre petrol power units.

For the driver and front seat passenger there's plenty of space and the seats are comfortable although some may find the offset pedals a chore when it comes to achieving a decent driving position.

The instruments and switchgear are laid out neatly and logically.

The 206 CC benefits from sporty dials, drilled pedals and an aluminium gearknob compared to a standard 206. These little touches make all the difference giving the car a youthful style and exuberance.

The chassis copes well when the top is down and the steering is sharp. The car's handling is good - whether on village lanes or motorways - and it is nicely balanced. Hit a bump or hole in the road though and the suspension takes offence.

There are three trim levels - Zest, Sport and the range topping Allure model which boasts digital air conditioning with climate control, leather interior, an alarm, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, plus electric windows and wing mirrors.

There's also a top notch audio system comprising of eight speakers that will blast the roof off if it's not already sitting in the boot.

Front and side airbags are just the start of an impressive array of safety kit that includes front seat belt web locks, side impact door padding, automatic door unlocking in the event of an accident and two rear three-point inertia reel seat belts.
