WHETHER it be that feline glint from the headlights, the unmistakable grooved bonnet, or the slinky supermodel shape, the Peugeot 206 is a terrific looking little car.
For those craving chic design, this British-built supermini really hits the mark - despite having been on the market since autumn 1998.
A choice of eight-valve 1.1, 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 litre petrol units, plus a pair of diesels - a 1.9D and more powerful 2.0 HDi - are currently available in a variety of trim levels. Taking the 1.6 as an example, you are looking at a nicely poised car that handles confidently and offers a top speed of 115mph from the 90bhp engine, with acceleration from 0-62mph in 11.7 seconds.
Even the most basic models are well kitted out. Power steering, driver's airbag, immobiliser, adjustable steering wheel and sounds are standard throughout - while the higher spec cars add air-con, CD player, remote central locking with deadlocks, electric front windows and mirrors.
The interior reveals some neat styling tricks like the concealed storage pit under the front passenger seat, a large glovebox with multi-purpose lid, and door bins wide enough to hold a drinks can - a rare treat.
Whichever version you favour, all are user-friendly with comfortable seats, well arranged dash and surprisingly decent space for four adults.
You get a large flat boot, plus split/fold rear seats and a folding front passenger seat, which allows a long load-through.
Peugeot 206 prices are very competitive at present, especially now more examples are becoming available on the used car market with a 1999 V registration.
For instance you can pick up a 1.4LX 3-door version at independent dealers for a bargain £5,550 with around 20,000 miles on the clock. Go upmarket to the more sporty Gti version and expect to pay closer to £7,000 for a 1999 T-reg model.
For those preferring to go topless, Coupe Cabriolet models with electric folding down roof are starting to creep onto the scene. While obviously a 206, the CC has a sexier profile and more striking interior.
Neat touches include nine-spoke alloys and a flush aircraft-style petrol filler cap. If you happen to be one of those people who have had their fabric top slashed by yobs, yet still hanker that wind in the hair experience, then this car with its clever, folding metal top is probably the car for you.
Two engines are available - a 110bhp 1.6 litre unit and a 139bhp 2.0 16-valver. Used prices are from £10,800 for a 2001 Y-reg 1.6 model in good condition.
