THE Peugeot 406 is now almost down to banger status but if you can find a good one with that all-important service history, it could be the family car for you.
The ride and handling were so good when it came out that contemporaries like the Vauxhall Vectra and Ford Mondeo didn’t match up.
Don’t consider any that are not just about perfect.
There are thousands to choose from so there’s always another - and many will have the all important service history.
Most started out as company cars, and so the mileage can sometimes be higher than average. But as long as the service records are there long miles don't matter so much.
Engines start with a 108bhp 1.8-litre, followed by a 135bhp 2.0-litre and a 150bhp turbo 2.0-litre.
The V6 3.0-litre range topper has 194bhp and stonking performance but it’s very thirsty. There are three diesels - a 92bhp 1.9 with, a 110bhp 2.1 or later 2.0-litre, and a 2.2 with 136bhp.
My best buy would be the 2.0-litre HDi diesel.
Interior
Air conditioning is standard on later cars but was an option in lieu of sunroof almost from launch. Specification is good on LX and above.
Peugeot servicing can be expensive, some parts are also pricey and engines can be difficult to work on so it’s not an easy car for DIY.
As well as the saloon, there are estate, and coupe models to choose from.
