What to look for:
During the test drive check that the car runs smoothly, without hesitation. Look out for excessive smoke from the exhaust, a lumpy idle or the smell of fuel in the cabin. Also check for flat spots in the power delivery combined with sudden surges of power.
What it means:
If the car is suffering from poor running, the EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) valves are often the problem. These will need to be repaired or replaced.
What to do
If you find this fault and the car is under warranty (3 years/60,000 miles) then Peugeot may replace the part for free. Otherwise try to negotiate a discount of £300 or have the repair completed as part of the deal.
