Matt,
I currently own a 2002 Peugeot 307 1.6 Rapier which after some recent garage visits is starting to cause us a few problems. I know it’s a Peugeot so I should expect a few niggles given its age – that said it has actually been a great car for us. However now it’s getting a little impractical with only two doors and also lacks air con along with a few other gadgets I’d like.
From valuation sites I reckon its worth in the region of £1600 – is this accurate given its 77k mileage? Also, just how good a position am I in when negotiating against a newer 1/2 year old car? Could I expect more or less against a £6/8k budget?
I’m looking at a few options – the ‘sensible’ Focus, the aspirational VW Golf or the new 308 which for a 5dr family hatch looks good and has some competitive nearly new prices. Any recommendations!?

Hi David
Actually, if the car is valeted with all the paperwork and properly advertised with a colour picture, I think you might get £2,200. That’s what my market data tells me, anyway. But it does seem like a lot.
Peugeots do lose chunks of cash early on, and the gadgets can play up, but if you like them then who cares? If you want lots of car for the money, that’s the way to go. There are basically new 308’s on the market for £8,000 right now. £2,000 less than new.
Similar money only buys a 2005 year Golf or a 2006 year Focus. How aspirational is a 4 year old car compared to a new one? It has to be the Peugeot, doesn’t it really? 3 year warranty, compared to none with the other two.
Happy nearly new motoring,
Matt
