Hi There, Last year my wife's car was written off and we needed to buy a new car. We loved the Grand Scenic and settled on an ex-motobility model (1.6 VVT Expression, 54 plate - price £6,999 at the time) with just under 6,000 miles on it. We still love the car, but the recent hike in petrol prices has meant that it is really costing my wife to run it. She has decided therefore that she wants to sell it/trade it and buy a Diesel model. We called the garage we bought the car from and they told us that they would give us £4,999 - a loss of £2,000 in 6 months - even though it's still only done under 11,000 miles. I need to know what would be a reasonable price for the car and would we get any more for it if we traded it in? Neither my wife or I are car or sales savvy and we're paranoid about being ripped off. Also - are we doing something stupid if we trade our low milage petrol model (and pay extra) for a 35,000-mile-plus diesel. Hope you can help, John & Lindsay Platt

Hi
The current dealer price for 2005 year cars is £6,600- £6,800, so you did not overpay if its a late 54 plate. Especially as average mileage is nearer 38,000 miles!
The problem you have, and we see people come upon it time and time again, is that the garage wants to sell cars, not buy them.
So while that is the value, as they don't want it, they make an insulting offer. That way they can't lose - they either get a bargain or don't have to buy a car, that they probably already have a couple of...
The only way out is to sell privately and then re-buy.
