RENAULT has unveiled a new version of its Clio capable of stretching more than 76 miles from a gallon of fuel.
Launched at the Brussels Motor Show, the super-frugal supermini also boasts a 15 per cent reduction in exhaust emissions and will cost no more than current versions when it goes on sale in the UK later this year.
'We're working hard to develop our range of electric vehicles ready for their launch next year, but we've still found time to produce our cleanest production car yet,' said a spokesman.
Set to be available in three and five-door forms, the new dCi 86-powered Clio emits just 98 grams of CO2 per kilometre making it exampt from road tax. A 12.1mpg increase in average economy gives it a theoretical range of 923 miles between fill-ups.
The figures have been achieved principally through a series of improvements to the Clio's aerodynamics, engine and tyres. Overall, the new versions offer an impressive 17g/km reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the current models, without any impact on driving performance.
'Our decision to sell the new versions at the at the same price as our current 115g/km version is a further sign of our aim to make ecological and economical vehicles available to as many motorists as possible,' said the spokesman.
