RENAULT has been recently making a name for itself with off-the-wall design, but many forget it has a strong sporting pedigree as well.
It was among the first car makers in the world to prove its products in early long distance rallies, it has a distinctive F1 and racing career, and even picked up top rallying awards.
It is therefore natural to see Renault spicing up its Clio range with the stripped out, lightweight Sport Cup model. Essentially a simplified version of the Renault Sport Clio 172, the Cup is £2,100 cheaper at under £13,000.
Sold as a three-door hatchback only, it has to be one of the bargain performance hot cars of the year.
It still pumps out a remarkable 172bhp from its 2.0 litre engine, which gives a time of under 7 seconds to 60mph, and almost 140mph maximum where allowed. It is also sufficiently lightweight and long geared to return about 35mpg overall.
So you get the best of both worlds, performance and economy, but delivered in a neat and not too expensive package.
What the bald figures cannot tell you is what it's like to drive, and that is just as rewarding. It is very lively and eager, sometimes a little skittish, but it is all entirely predictable and enormous fun. You can place the car accurately and confidently, with good road holding and responses.
I do not personally like the high set pedals or weak handbrake, but the responsive steering and strong brakes are welcome.
Being three-door, there is a little difficulty getting into the back, but those in the front have no such problems and room is generous. Visibility is good with large windows, very bright lights and good wipers.
It is a busy engine when extended but generally it is a quiet car, and surprisingly comfortable as well.
There is no doubt that with the overall package Renault dealers can now offer with the Clio Cup, that it will take a lot of beating. It is a good blend of performance and practicality which underline its value.
