RENAULT has released the first official picture of the new Laguna ahead of its motor show debut in September.
This will be at Frankfurt in advance of the car's UK arrival the following month, nearer which time prices will be announced.
There will be a wide range of engines on offer including a two-litre diesel coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission system that Renault has developed with partner Nissan.
Whether or not the new Laguna will form the basis of a replacement for the now-defunct Nissan Primera remains to be seen.
Renault will be claiming a family car economy record for the version powered by its 1.5 dCi 110bhp engine that achieves 55mpg with a CO2 figure of 136g/km.
There will also be a new generation of double side air bags to protect the thorax and pelvis.
As is the case with virtually all of its competitors, the new Laguna is bigger than the model it replaces yet becomes the first Renault to be lighter than its predecessor by shedding an average of 15kg.
The hatchback version is 36mm wider, 10mm longer and 12mm taller than the current car and the Sport Tourer model incorporates what Renault calls a new Superfold system for the rear seats that creates a completely flat load platform.
