What to look for:
Check the paperwork to see if the cam belt has been changed on schedule. On most engines the cam belt must be changed within 5 years or 50,000 miles. (Renault state 777,000 but independent specialists recommend the earlier figure).
What it means:
If the cam belt and associated parts (such as alternator belt and tensioner) have not been changed, and the mileage is over these boundaries, the cam belt is likely to fail soon. Usually the engine has to be replaced or at least re-built after a cam belt failure.
What to do
Ensure that the cam belt is changed before the car is driven anywhere if it is coming close to its interval. Changing the belt will cost £250.

Here's an example fault on the RENAULT Laguna (2007 - Present)
What to look for:
When the engine is warm, check for black smoke from the exhaust under power, coupled with a reluctance to rev cleanly.
What it means:
If you see evidence of this fault then it is possible the turbo is blown. Even if you see no evidence it is advisable to ask the vendor whether the turbo has ever been replaced. If it has, then ask the vendor whether the EGR valve was replaced at the same time. This is a valve that allows exhaust gas into the turbo to reduce operating temperature. If the EGR valve fails the turbo can overheat and blow. It is therefore essential to replace the EGR valve at the same time as replacing the turbo.
What to do
If the car is under warranty (3 years/100,000 miles) Renault may fix it for free. If both turbo and EGR valve need replacing budget £1300. If just the EGR valve needs to be replaced then try to negotiate £200 off the asking price or, if the car is at a specialist or a main dealer try to get them to replace the EGR as part of the deal.
