Renault Megane
Co2: 118-178
Best used eco-buy: 1.5 Dci
Why buy?
Whilst not the most complete family hatchback, or most practical family car, it is a uniquely enjoyable experience to live with a Renault Megane.
The styling is controversial; it sets an expectation that the car will not be as god as a Vauxhall Astra or Ford Focus. But I actually found it to be practical, economical and fun to live with.
The 1.5 dCi engine in this car is the same unit found in the Nissan QashQai and it is the one to go for. 60 mpg is achievable, even if you drive it hard now and then. It is quiet at low speed, refined at high speed. True, its acceleration is unremarkable, but you can’t have everything.

What’s the market like?
2003 and 2004 Megane 1.5 DCis can be found for as little as £2,600, but they will have eye-watering mileage. £5,000 however buys you a lot of reliable motoring. 2005 and 2006 cars with average miles of 45,000 – 55,000 are what you should expect. There are a few hundred in the market like this, so don’t buy anything tatty. Look for full service history and good condition.
Key fault to check for and avoid
If you have the key card on your person, the car should unlock when you pull the handle. If it doesn't first time, it will usually open second. Either way, there may be a problem with the optical sensors and they will need to be replaced. This may be intermittent. Negotiate a £150 discount.
