Megane turns on seductive charm - Renault Megane Car Review

SEDUCTION is the name of the game as Renault goes about sexing up its new Megane.

Stunning looks are going to make this a car which leaps out from the crowd when it goes on sale in late January.

Chic is an understatement as the French car maker goes about taking on VW and Vauxhall in the small coupe market.

With deep front air vents, sculpted lines and - of course - a curvy rear end, the Megane Coupe is the most stylish car Renault has put into production.

Priced from £14,745, the sporty Megane will be going head to head with the Vauxhall Astra and VW's new Scirocco.

Renault says it wants to seduce motorists with the sheer flair of its new coupe - and from every aspect it is a head turner.

It will be available in three trim levels, Expression, Dynamique and Privilege, with a choice of six engines, three petrol and three diesel.

While the two-litre petrol version has the best performance - 0 to 60 in 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 142mph - the pick of the bunch has to be the 130bhp 1.9-litre diesel.

With more than enough mid-range acceleration it is capable of the 0 to 60 sprint in around 9.5 seconds and has the bonus of lower emissions and better economy than its petrol counterpart.

You can expect to average around 55 to the gallon while its CO2 rating is 134g/km. The leanest version uses Renault's 1.5-litre diesel and can average more than 60mpg but there is a trade off with performance.

The entry level Megane Coupes are available with 1.6-litre petrol engines and two versions of the 1.5 diesel, one developing 86bhp and the other 106.

The two-litre petrol and 1.9 diesel only come on stream in mid-range Dynamique trim and are priced from £18,145 and £18,295 respectively.

The range tops out at £19,195 for the top specification 1.9 diesel in Privilege trim.

All versions make use of six speed manual gearboxes and while there is no automatic a CVT box will be fitted to the two-litre engine but only on Privilege models.

The manual boxes are not as slick as they could be but the car is sweet to handle and as fun to drive as it looks.

Compared to the Megane hatch which went on sale only a few weeks ago, the ride is noticeable firmer as a result of sports suspension.

All versions have keyless entry, air conditioning and come with alloys as standard but - more importantly - they also have electronic stability controls.

Automatic headlights and wipers, cruise control and a Bluetooth phone system come with Dynamique trim while Privilege models add dual zone climate control, parking sensors and an auto-dim interior mirror.

Inside, both the Megane coupe and hatch are smartly styled with two-tone trim and curvy dash giving plenty of space.

Satellite navigation with a full colour display is a £1,600 extra but does give the car a high tech feel.

The hatch, which is priced from £13,995, has much more conservative looks than the coupe. That said, without the firm suspension it is the nicer to drive but lacks the sensational looks.

If ever a car came from concept to reality with minimal change it is the Megane Coupe - a bold move by Renault but one which is likely to pay dividends with so many drivers demanding to cut a dash.
