Question

Could you advise me pls? I have a 2004 1.9 tdci megane 5 dr which has a 6 speed gearbox. it has started jumping out of 6th gear on a run or on local runs. I had a extra van that had the same problem many years ago and it was the "nut on the end of a shaft come loose" it was repaired in situ and cost little to repair. my local dealer is saying this is NOT the same fault and would require the gearbox to be removed for inspection and repair. they are reluctant to even have a drive or cursory look at it. they just seem to want to pull out the gearbox and run up a huge bill for me. any suggestions please.

Answer

Hi

Sounds like you need to go to a new garage. If they won't even go out with you first to see the problem first hand there is no chance they will solve it in the most cost effective way. That's just good customer care.

That said, from a technical point of view there is a good chance they are right. We list known common gearboxes faults in our guide:  http://www.usedcarexpert.co.uk/cars.aspx?numModel=570
