Renault Megane Privilege 1.9 dCi 130 - Renault Megane Car Review

INTRODUCED in November last year were the trail blazers of an all-new Renault Megane range, the hatchback and coupe models, which are the harbingers of a six-model line up which is expected to be complete by 2010.

The third generation Megane hatchback is larger than the outgoing model with styling being robust rather than innovatively head turning. Gone is the distinctive, but decidedly funky looking rear end as the eye catching overall looks of the latest generation five-door hatch concentrates on fluid and forceful lines which blend in with harmonious proportions to deliver a neat and very modern silhouette.

Steeply raked headlights and windscreen give notice of the latent power and combine with a good standard of panel fit and finish for the high quality materials used in the bodywork.

In a cabin which feels roomy and airy, there is a feeling of quality throughout and the increased overall dimensions have been used to good effect, particularly in the provision of increased space for a trio of average sized adult rear seat passengers. Fabrics and plastics are soft to the touch.

There are a number of stowage areas including front underfloor storage, some practical cubby holes and a 372 litre boot which extends to 405 litres with 60/40 split rear seats folded.

Trim levels are threefold, Expression, Dynamique and Privilege, and a generous entry level kit manifest includes the likes of air con, four-speaker audio system with single CD, electric windows all round, 'See Me Home' headlights, electrically operated and heated door mirrors and six airbags.

The range topping Privilege model driven here adds audio with Bluetooth, cruise control, front fogs, dual zone climate control, rear parking sensors while the door mirrors automatically fold when parked up - a useful feature, particularly when parked on a narrow street.

For the engine, Renault has four petrol and three diesel powertrains on offer, in the frame here is the punchy 1.9 dCi diesel power source in 130bhp guise.

Courtesy of two-way steering wheel adjustment and driver's seat height movement, the driving position is comfortable facing an innovatively designed dashboard with analogue rev counter, digital speedo and, another innovation, the cruise control/speed limiter.

Paired with a smooth slotting six-speed gear change, the new Megane Hatch delivers its peak power from as low as 3,750rpm. A rewarding performance in the overtaking lanes is also complemented by the availability of some strong low down torque and there is the promise of around 55mpg on average.

Responding swiftly to the exceptionally light feel to the touch of its controls, this latest generation Megane Hatch is a joy to drive, the chassis helping to deliver some neat handling before settling down to provide a nicely refined, quality ride in all parts when on the cruise.
