Here's an example fault on the RENAULT Modus (2007 - Present)

What to look for:

When the engine is warm, check for black smoke from the exhaust under power, coupled with a reluctance to rev cleanly. Even if you see no evidence of this fault it is advisable to ask the vendor whether the turbo has been replaced. If it has then ask the vendor whether the EGR valve was replaced at the same time.

What it means:

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. This is a valve that allows exhaust gas into the turbo to reduce operating temperature. If the EGR valve fails the turbo can overheat and blow. It is therefore essential to replace the EGR valve at the same time as replacing the turbo. To replace just the EGR valve will cost £160 at a main dealer and about £140/£150 at a specialist. The cost of replacing both the turbo and EGR Valve is going to be £1733 at a main dealer and about £1400 at a specialist.

What to do

If the car is under warranty Renault will fix it for free. If not, and both the EGR valve and turbo have been replaced early on then there is no cause for concern. If the turbo has been replaced but not the EGR valve then try to negotiate £200 off the asking price or, if the car is at a specialist or a main dealer try to get them to replace the EGR as part of the deal.
