Here's an example fault on the RENAULT Safrane (1993 - 2000)
What to look for:
1) As well as the normal oil dipstick, there is a second dipstick for the automatic gearbox. Remove, wipe and dip this back into the oil. When you pull the dip stick out for the second time, the oil should be between the top and bottom marker. The oil should be a bright red colour.
2) During the test drive notice if the car clonks or thumps when changing gear.
What it means:
If the gearbox oil is low, pink or brown there is a problem. Low oil is a sign of poor maintenance. Pink oil suggests water ingress and brown suggests the oil is very overdue for a change. The thumping gear change is a result of this.
What to do
Have the gearbox serviced and inspected to ensure there are no lasting problems.
