Hi
I have a Rover 45 and the engine fan is not working, even when the car is running for a while.
The water in plastic radiator top up tank also seems cool and the engine has a nasty smell after running a while.
Can you help advise please?
The plastic top up tank will not normally get very hot, but that nasty smell sounds, well, nasty.
First check the fan is working – they often sieze up after a winter of being exposed to road salt. The simplest way to check is to disconnect the coolant sensor temperature plug, which should make the fan run continuously.
If not, get the wiring and fan motor checked out. If the fan does work, the coolant may not be circulating. This could be a stuck thermostat (often caused by the engine overheating in the past), a blocked radiator or possibly a broken water pump (this one is the least likely so check the others first).
Get it sorted quickly, because if it’s a petrol engined Rover, the head gasket will blow at the first hint of overheating.
