Here's an example fault on the ROVER 800 (1991 - 2000)
What to look for:
Check the paperwork to see if the cam belt has been changed on schedule. The cam belt must be changed as follows:
- Cars built before 1991 at 48,000 miles or 5 years
- V6 engined cars built before 1996 at 96,000 miles or 8 years
- Almost all others at 60,000 or 5 years
Many garages recommend changing the belt at 48,000 miles to be safe.
What it means:
If the cam belt and associated parts (such as water pump and tensioner) have not been changed, and the mileage is over these boundaries, the cam belt is likely to fail soon. Usually the engine has to be replaced or at least re-built after a cam belt failure.
What to do
Negotiate a £200 (most engines) - £500 (post 1996 V6s) discount or have the repair completed.
