I have an entry in the Mongol Rally 2009.
This is pretty hard on cars. The rules state that the car must be less than 10 years and be less than 1000cc (perhaps 1200). At the end of the rally it is given to a Mongol charity, so it needs to start off cheap.
In your view what cars should I consider that will give me a reasonable chance of getting there?
Answer
The Mongal rally is the one where there isn't a route, isn't it?
Everyone sets out for the finish line, takes whatever road they want, fends entirely for themselves and then gets wildly drunk at the end? Sounds great.
The two cars to consider are year 2000 - ish models of either:
- Fiat Cinquecento (a bit flimsy, but lots about)
- Daewoo Matiz (made from Vauxhall parts so easy to fix)
£1,000 buys any of the above in very good condition - but shop around because there are lots of tatty ones on the market for too much money!
Spend nearer £2,000 and you can find the odd Smart car! That will be a much more enjoyable drive.
