My 1999 2 litre Saab 95 was always serviced by the main dealer or Saab specialist and always had fully synthetic oil.
Last year I took it to a local garage (weel established and reputable) where they used semi synthetic despite me checking with them before they started that fully synthetic would be used. I only discovered it when querying why the oil was so cheap on the bill.
I drove the car away and came back the next day when they changed it to fully synthetic. I have read an article that suggested that not all synthetic oils are truely fully synthetic.
Can you please tell me what oils are equivalent to the Saab original oil as I intend to do my own oil change this year. Should I stick to Saab oil or am I quite safe using a cheaper "equivalent" from say Halfords or a local motor factors?
Likewise oil filter. Thanks.
Answer
Any oil advertised as fully synthetic will be, but check the small print if it just says “synthetic” as it might be semi synthetic. Mobil 1 is the best known, but all the major oil producers do their own version and all will be fine for your Saab.
A filter from any reputable high street store or motor factor will be fine as well – but try the motor factors for the oil and the filter because they may well be cheaper.
