Start the engine and listen through the bonnet for a rattle from the engine. If you can hear a rattle, time how long it lasts for up to 30 seconds. Check the paperwork to see when the car was last serviced and had an oil change.
What it means:
Even bad engines will be quiet once the oil has circulated and the engine is warm. If an engine rattles for more than 30 seconds when cold, it needs an oil change a long run.
What to do
