THE Seat Cordoba saloon can look a little dumpy from some angles but the Vario estate is better looking and hugely practical.
There are not many smaller four doors and estates around and because the Vario and hatchback Ibiza are more practical, the saloon is a bargain.
Before 2001, there were 1.4 or 1.6 petrol and 90bhp 1.9 diesel engines. From then until production stopped in 2006, only the saloon was available with 1.4 75bhp petrol and 1.9 TDI that has 100 or 130bhp.
The saloon has a huge boot, and is reasonably spacious inside too, so it's well worth a look.
All are based on the Ibiza, with the same chunky-changing VW five speed gearbox and a light clutch.
The petrols are OK, but the 90, 100 and 130bhp diesels are the pick of the range, with pace, economy and long lasting quality. Diesel economy is in the 50s.
All have power steering and driver's airbag or better, ride is good, and handling and roadholding are right up their with the best.
Interior.
The driving position is good with all the right seat adjustments, and all controls are well to hand.
Firm seats hold well in the corners, and are comfortable over a long journey.
