1) Start the engine and listen for the engine misfiring (rather than the revs being constant when on idle and the engine making a consistent noise, it splutters and spits). 2) Take the car for a drive and be prepared that it could cut out at the first junction you stop at.
What it means:
The most common reason for a misfire or cut-out (if the engine management light is off) is the spark plug leads. If a garage tests the existing leads and believes them to be fine, insist they try a new set of leads as it usually cures the problem. If the battery has recently gone flat, the light may just need re-setting.
