SEAT has unveiled the forthcoming three-door version of its new Ibiza supermini and given it a special name to make it more appealing.

Whilst the five-door version will be called simply the Ibiza, the three-door model will be known as the Ibiza SportCoupe in a bid to take on sporty rivals such as the Kia pro-cee'd.

SEAT is keen to be regarded as the sporting brand within the giant Volkswagen group and the Ibiza SportCoupe will get powerful FR and Cupra versions in due course.

The car will also become the first supermini to use seven-speed DSG double clutch gearbox technology, with the ultra slick-shifting automatic/sequential manual gearbox being an option on 1.6-litre versions of the new car.

Fractionally lower than the five-door models, the SportCoupe gets lower headlamps and a repositioned radiator grille to create a sleeker appearance.

Longer than the current model - the new five-door Ibiza is 4.05m versus the existing car's 3.97m - it has more rear seat legroom and a larger boot which, at 292 litres with the rear seats in place, is claimed to be the largest in the supermini class.

The front-wheel drive newcomer will initially offer three petrol engines comprising a 1.2-litre three cylinder, a 1.4-litre four cylinder and a 1.6-litre four cylinder unit generating 102bhp.

They will be mated as standard to a five-speed manual gearbox and all will have a CO2 figure under 160g/km.

A range of direct-injection turbodiesel models will follow, but at this stage the company says it is not releasing any more information.
