The Octavia was conclusive proof that Skoda could be taken seriously as a maker of quality family cars. That is because some of the best elements from parent company Volkswagen and sister company Audi were assembled into a very attractive package. The hatchbacks and saloons had good engines, were very practical and that made the Octavia an ideal choice for the private buyer and for the first time company car users and £5K will get you into a 2005 example which is great value.
The ride was comfortable and being based on the latest VW Golf and Audi A3 the handling was a strong point. Not an involving driver’s car perhaps, but very capable, composed and with plenty of grip on tight bends. Where it matters though on urban journeys and the motorway, it was more than a match in refinement for any family car rival.

Under the bonnet were some great Volkswagen engines including the smallest 1.6, which is perfectly adequate, with good 36mpg economy although it is worth remembering that there is a 100 bhp and 75bhp version. Apart form the sometimes pricier diesels the best compromise is the willing 1.8 20V, which suits the car's agreeable nature, whilst the range topping 110 Tdi diesel was the best all rounder for those who intended to make their Octavia work hard.
It is certainly a practical vehicle with an absolutely huge boot. Rear seat passengers could find the legroom a bit tight, but there should be no complaints up front. The dashboard is well designed, easy to use and the rake adjustable steering wheel means that getting comfy is never a problem for the driver. Only those familiar with VW interior trim can spot the cost saving shortcuts, but on the whole it is very well built and solid.
Refined, smooth and spacious, nothing like Skodas of old.
