Skoda Octavia vRS 2.0T FSI - SKODA OCTAVIA Car Review

BILLED as the fastest car to come off the Skoda production line, the Octavia vRS certainly has plenty to live up to.

Powered by a two-litre TFSI turbo engine linked to the six-speed gearbox and a top speed of 149mph, this model is certainly something a bit special, especially as its price tag undercuts its closest rivals.

With its 17-inch alloy wheels, a boot spoiler and figure-hugging sports seats, green brake calipers and touches of leather throughout, the vRS has a real sporty feel and, in addition, handles exceptionally well, hugging every bend and offering great cornering stability.

But there is more to this model than boy-racer appeal. It has a proven safety track record, is spacious inside with all dials and controls easy to hand and has a large luggage compartment with plenty of other storage spaces throughout.

It comes complete with plenty of mod cons like a CD player, air con with a pollen filter and even a tyre pressure monitor.

In fact, there is no end to the touches of luxury throughout, but it doesn't take long behind the wheel before the poor all-round driver visibility becomes apparent - mainly due to that rear spoiler creeping into the rear view mirror.

But that aside, it is hard to find fault - long gone are those days when you only had to look at a Skoda to stifle a laugh. Nowadays, with the influence of VW, the Czech built cars are a very serious contender in the marketplace and have recently scooped a host of awards to prove it.

Safety features highly on the Octavia with anti-lock braking system, electronic brakeforce distribution, electronic stability programme and traction control fitted as standard, along with plenty of airbags and a special body shell with progressive crumple zones to protect the occupants.

These features clearly explain why the model outscored so many of its class-rivals in the Euro NCAP safety checks.
