RESPECT and refinement is a winning combination for the Skoda Octavia vRS estate.

The marque is highly thought of by rally fans who appreciate rock hard reliability and, under the umbrella of Volkswagen, it has come on leaps and bounds on everyday roads.

The range has gradually expanded and today's latest version is the flying Octavia vRS estate, which combines the space of a country estate with the get up and go of a rally car.

What's more remarkable is the fact that it is a bargain at close to £16,000.

Under the bonnet is a boosted 20v, 1.8 litre engine producing 180bhp, which equates to a hefty hundred horses per litre.

So performance is good, very good, but it is sufficiently sophisticated to return very good economy as well, and with low emissions it really is cheap to run.

The vRS specification includes alloys and distinctive Brembo brake calipers in green and they impart excellent stopping power and tenacious grip from the big wheels and tyres.

Neatly finished bucket seats in leather and fabric hold occupants securely, but are very comfortable as well as firm.

There's powered windows, automatic air conditioning and heated mirrors as well as very bright lights, which means it is a joy to use in any conditions.

Roof rails are fitted as standard, as is a luggage blind, and the cargo area is deep, flat and wide. There are even reinforcing strips across the floor to protect the matting.

Folding the back seats creates more space than in a BMW 3 Series Touring, and almost as much as the MG ZT-T.

There is nothing which cuts corners in this car, but it stands out as a value for money serious estate which packs in performance and driving pleasure as well.
