SKODA is planning to add a new dimension to king-size family motoring by putting an eco crown on the forthcoming estate version of the Superb model.

Six months after it reaches the showrooms in February, the biggest load-carrier in the upper-medium sector will be available in special eco form to offer more than 57mpg average economy.

The best-of-both-worlds workhorse car will use a modified version of the Volkswagen Group's new 1.6-litre common rail diesel engine and will be an additional GreenLine model. Specification details are not yet available, but it is understood exhaust emissions will be 119g/km.

'Customers have given such a positive response to the GreenLine version of the Superb hatchback that went on sale last year that we have decided to offer the economy package on the estate," said Skoda UK executive Martin Burke.

'In the current economic climate, we feel this is just the right vehicle for business users and family motorists alike.'

To be based on the lead-in S model, the GreenLine estate will stand on alloy wheels and have revised gearing, low rolling-resistance tyres, cruise control, lowered suspension, darkened glass and a small rear spoiler.
