SKODA says that its new Superb luxury model will be a unique combination of a saloon and hatchback.
The company has developed what it calls a new Twindoor system in a bid to offer the best of both worlds.
It enables the rear end to be opened as a conventional boot or a full tailgate including the rear window.
The unusual layout has been patented to prevent its rivals from copying the idea when the cars go on sale here later this year.
Skoda says that the enlarged newcomer will also offer even more room inside than the current car, which is already one of the most spacious saloons available at any price.
Among its many class-leading features are said to be up to nine air bags, bi-xenon headlamps that can see around corners and a touch-screen satellite navigation system.
However, the most impressive party trick will be the vehicle's so-called parking assistant that will be able to park the car automatically in a line of stationery vehicles.
Currently on display at the Geneva Motor Show with a 3.6-litre V6 engine, the latest incarnation will come with the option of three petrol and three diesel units plus a choice of manual and direct shift semi-automatic transmissions.
The full UK specification and prices that are likely to range from about £14,500 to £23,000, will be announced closer to the model's UK launch date in September.
