Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, put it back and pull it out again to see how much oil is in the car. The reading should be near to the top of two main markers.

Low oil, or the wrong oil, suggests the car has been badly looked after. Over-full oil, whilst indicating a caring owning, can burn the vales out.
