What to look for:

Check the paperwork to ensure that fully synthetic oil has been used. When the engine is cold, open the bonnet and locate the oil dip stick. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, put it back and pull it out again to see how much oil is in the car. The reading should be near to the top of two main markers.

What it means:

Low oil, or the wrong oil, suggests the car has been badly looked after. Over-full oil, whilst indicating a caring owning, can burn the vales out.

What to do

Have the car examined by an expert. Budget £1,500 to repair the damage from burn valves.
