Subaru Forester 2.5 XTE - Subaru Forester Car Review

IT may not have the razzle dazzle fins and spoilers that other Subaru models sport but make no mistake, the Forester is right up there when it comes to performance.

Looks are a little deceptive with the Forester – it could easily be lumped into the boring old estate class with little to offer except bundles of space.

But, think again, the Forester oozes class with outstanding handling, top-notch specifications and road-hugging ability that equals class-leading performance cars.

Added to that, there are all the luxurious touches one has become used to in modern motoring, including CD player, air con, a multi-function centre console and seat warmers, as well as all that space.

The turbo-charged 2.5XTE model supplied for the test drive boasted a very responsive engine along with all-wheel drive that was up to any challenge put in its path, offering a comfortable and enjoyable ride both in and around town and on the more open road.

All-round visibility was excellent which made everyday driving, along with parking and reversing, a complete doddle. And with larger wheels and its low centre of gravity, the Forester is really staking its claim in the sports utility vehicle market.

There is an abundance of storage space, especially with the rear seats folded forward – in fact, there is enough room for the kitchen sink!

Elsewhere, there are numerous smaller compartments plus two holders for sunglasses, etc.

As one would come to expect from Subaru, the performance features are equally matched by the safety specifications with advanced anti-lock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution, active front head restraints to reduce whiplash injuries, numerous airbags and reinforced frames and pillars.

It really says something about the confidence Subaru has in its Forester that it lists the more expensive BMW X3 as its closest rival.
