THE latest top-range car from Subaru drives into 2010 with more distinctive looks from longer, lower and wider bodywork.
But the Japanese manufacturer claims that clever new technology under the bonnet means the new Legacy also boasts the refinement of upmarket motoring.
A new cradle mount system carrying the engine and six-speed transmission unit promotes less noise and vibration and the sub-frame also carries the front suspension and power steering to improve ride comfort and refinement.
'Steering response is enhanced and the car is also quieter thanks to reduced vibrations,' says a spokesman.
Building on the premium ambience created by new styling, the new model is equipped to ensure maximum comfort and features dual-zone, fully automatic air-conditioning with an anti-dust filter and heating ducts to the rear passenger footwells.
Also standard are a premium audio system, with a radio/CD player, six speakers and steering wheel-mounted remote controls, automatic headlamps and windscreen wipers and keyless access.
The fifth-generation all-wheel-drive Legacy, now priced from £18,600, also gets a new electronic handbrake and a revised braking system that includes hill-hold, a function particularly useful during towing .
The car's two-litre 'boxer' diesel engine develops 150bhp - sufficient to take it from standstill to 62mph in 9.3 seconds and on to a 126mph top speed - and average economy is 47.8mpg.
