WHEN it comes to the smaller end of the market, cars are becoming much more refined as so many buyers realise how much they can save by downsizing - and how little they lose.
Today's small cars come with all the mod cons that were at one time the reserve of range topping larger models.
Take the latest Suzuki Splash, which is built in the same East European plant as the Vauxhall Agila and is to all intents and purposes the same car.
It's sharp and pretty, with five doors instead of the usual three for entry models, and even with my large frame up front there is still space for another of the same size behind.
The 1.2 engine is willing and smooth, offering zippy performance around town and enough to keep up on the motorway.
Apart from a slightly bouncy ride in town it's very comfortable and through the corners it is grippy and very safe, with positive steering and excellent balance.
Interior
Inside it's much bigger than it looks. There's space for four adults as I said but you'd need a roof rack for the luggage because the boot is tiny. A 60/40 split-fold back seat does help if there are less people.
The controls are light and easy apart from the gearchange, which is notchy and occasionally awkward.
