SUZUKI is the latest manufacturer of small cars to drive CO2 emissions down below the all-important 120g/km mark.
Owners of cars with a CO2 figure lower than that pay just £35 a year road tax and will be exempt from congestion charging in London from October.
They are also likely to be exempt from similar congestion charges that are expected to be gradually rolled out in several cities throughout the UK.
Suzuki's environmentally-friendly newcomer is the Swift 1.3 DDiS.
Thanks to some tweaks to the diesel engine, the CO2 figure falls from 124g/km to 119g/km, which places the model in the 'B' Band VED rating, giving it an annual road tax saving of £80.
Exemption from the London Congestion Charge will represent a saving of about £2,000 a year for commuters.
The 1.3-litre common rail diesel engine with turbocharger and intercooler is mated to a manual five-speed gearbox and generates 68bhp with acceleration to 60mph in 14.5 seconds, a top speed of 100mph and economy of 60mpg.
Standard equipment includes radio/CD player, remote central locking and immobiliser, electric front windows, electrically-powered and heated door mirrors, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, tinted glass, air conditioning, alloy wheels, front fog lamps and keyless entry and start.
The price rises by £515 to £10,515 and the car is placed in insurance group four.
