Peugeot Citroen, Europe's second-biggest carmaker, is recalling some cars made with Toyota in Europe.
"For Peugeot 107s and Citroen C1s, we are going to carry out an identical campaign as Toyota," a spokesman said.
The Japanese car giant has now recalled millions of cars worldwide with faulty accelerator pedals. See Toyota Recall & advice details here.
The Peugeot 107, Citroen C1 and the Aygo are essentially the same car with different styling and fittings. Both the Peugeot Citroen models are made in a Czech plant, alongside the Toyota Aygo.
Peugeot said "under 100,000" cars will be recalled. It did not say when the recall would begin and liek Toyota seems unable at this stage to say exactly which cars (i.e. the VINs or registrations) are affected.
Used Car Expert Editor Matt Tumbridge commented, "What makes these recalls unusual is that the companies either don't know, or don't want to say exactly how many vehicles are affected with this potentially serious fault. Recalls are relatively comon, indeed Honda has just issued a recall for its Honda Jazz because there is a risk that their power switches could catch fire in rare situations. But they have immediately told us how many Jazzs are affected and therefore been able to contact owners and dealers."
"This means concerned owners can call a dealer, tell them their car registration or VIN number and the dealer will tell them if there is a problem. If there is, the car can be taken in and fixed for free. With the Toyota, Peugeot, Citroen pedal issue, drivers can't yet call dealers because dealers don't know which cars may have the problem. So there is a nervous wait for everyone concerned."
