DESPITE the worldwide recalls of some models, Toyota’s reputation for reliability has never been in doubt in the trade.
Their cars have traditionally suffered among the lowest numbers of breakdowns or problems of any large volume manufacturer.
The Avensis Verso midi-MPV is not the prettiest of shapes, but if you can live with that it’s unlikely to give you a moment’s worry.
The D4D 2.0-litre turbo diesel has decent performance with a smooth and willing power delivery and over 40 miles per gallon economy.
There is also a 2.0-litre petrol with 147bhp and slightly better performance, but only 32 miles per gallon economy.
It’s comfortable, refined and reasonably quiet seven seater and holds the road very well for a something the size and shape of a garden shed.
I know one man who used his to move house, only needing to hire a van for the extra large items.
Interior
This is one versatile family holdall with seven seats, but the rear two are only suitable for kids.
There is real family space for five, with loads of storage, and the rear two seats fold down easily into the boot floor to give huge stowage space.
