THE Toyota Avensis might not be the most inspiring of family cars, but it drives as well as the best and is far more reliable than most.
All are 90 per cent British - built in Derby - and smooth, economical petrol engines range from a 1.6 with 106bhp through 1.8 to a two litre with 145.
Diesels are a slow two litre with 88bhp at first, later increased to a much better 108.
Excellent power steering was carried over from previous models and all have a five speed gearbox and light clutch.
An optional four speed automatic was available with the two litre engine and bodies are four door, five door or in limited specifications, five door estate.
All the engines are smooth and powerful and performance is better than average across the board.
Roadholding and handling are good, with strong grip and fair balance, and while comfort is fairly good, its not quite up to the best.
Interior.
It has one of the biggest cabins in class and excellent seat adjustment for a superb driving position.
Equipment is usually above average and even the base models have central locking, split folding rear seats, tinted glass, height and lumbar adjustment for the driver's seat and a decent stereo.
