IT seems to have been around for ever, but the latest Toyota Avensis is still packed with charm, technology and classy design features.
Now in its third generation, the British-built Avensis, which was first launched in 1998, has come on in leaps and bounds and now boasts one of the most comfortable and safest rides available in its segment.
And the sleek streamlined design with distinctive headlight clusters, means it is guaranteed to turn heads too.
The Tourer model supplied for my drive had plenty of room for five adults along with all their goodies and the top notch technology throughout guarantees a fun-packed journey.
The 2.2-litre engine delivered ample power both in and around town and out on the open road, and the six-speed manual gearbox aided the smooth acceleration and agility of the ride.
The interior is packed with classy technology including dual-zone air conditioning, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, dusk-sensing headlights, an 11-speaker sound system, leather upholstery and heated seats to name just a few.
And these controls are all perfectly positioned throughout the cabin for ease of use, so leaving the driver to concentrate fully on important matters such as the drive itself. And this is assisted by the excellent all-round visibility.
Safety features are first class too with seven airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist. In addition, there is steering assist vehicle stability control - a new feature fitted as standard to all models - which operates with the traction control to improve vehicle traction and safety in low grip conditions, such as rain, snow, or gravel.
Another feature to help prevent accidents is the emergency brake signal which is fitted to all models. This is designed to help avoid rear-end collisions and automatically activates flashing brake lights during emergency braking.
All these features are a clue to the success story of the Avensis and with the constant revision of design, technology and safety, Toyota remains a key player in producing vehicles packed with features at a price that won't break the bank.
